U.S. EMBASSY ANNOUNCES ITS SUPPORT FOR GREASE

The U.S. Embassy this morning officially announced its support for Teatru Astra’s forthcoming musical Grease, during a press conference at the US Ambassador’s residence in Attard.  Mro Sigmund Mifsud, musical director, and Mr. Chris Gatt, artistic director, will direct the production and work with a unique blend of talented young artists from Malta and Gozo to bring this popular musical, live, to local audiences. The production is the first of its genre at Teatru Astra and will be staged on 16 and 17 April 2016.

Thanks to the U.S. Embassy’s sponsorship and support, Teatru Astra and the University of Malta’s Department of Gender Studies will organize workshops for students on gender politics. The workshops will challenge ideas portrayed in the musical, such as gender stereotypes, peer pressure, date rape and discrimination against women.

In brief remarks, U.S. Ambassador G. Kathleen Hill praised the partnership between Teatru Astra and the Department of Gender Studies and their efforts to break down gender stereotypes. Ambassador Hill reiterated the U.S. Government’s commitment to combat discrimination, eliminate violence against women and girls, expand access to women’s healthcare, support women-owned businesses and entrepreneurs, and encourage women’s economic and political leadership.

“This event exemplifies how important it is for policies around funding to have principled strategies underpinning them,” said Dr Brenda Murphy, Department of Gender Studies. “The resultant partnership born out of this sponsorship demonstrates this, and promises a real and tangible impact on gender politics.
